Salon 94 Bowery
Richard Prince, known for his nurse paintings, canvases emblazoned with kindofcorny jokes, use of photos showing images of cowboys, celebrities, or a nude, tenyearold Brooke Shields, is currently exhibiting his and unglitzy TShirt Paintings at Salon
94 Bowery, a "miniretrospective of Prince painting, spanning nearly twentyfive
and ribbed collars visible. The Tshirt Paintings "mirror Prince more known work and coexist alongside it, exploring other avenues of the artist persona." The images on the tshirts range from typical Prince jokes; abstracts; Jimi Hendrix; and Led Zeppelin CD labels affixed directly onto the shirts. My favorites are the ones featuring simple, nike free run, childlike animals and flowers that "normally hang in Prince daughter bedroom." These are minimal and playful with an added endearing and personal quality since they belong to the artist daughter.
Richard Prince: TShirt Paintings is the debut exhibit for Salon 94 Bowery. The gallery, owned by Work of Art judge Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn, with locations on East 94th Street and on Freeman Alley (just around the corner from the Bowery location), has taken over a former restaurant supply store and has yet to be renovated. The raw, grungy space feels like the perfect environment to display Prince casual, dresseddown works. Through June 26th. |
