Sim settling in with Rampage
Going into his seventh game with the AHL's San Antonio Rampage Wednesday night, Jon Sim is starting to feel comfortable in game play again. He said a lot of that has to do with his timing.
"It was hard at the start having eight months off because skating and working out doesn't prepare you to jump in with the guys that have been playing for the past few months," he said. "There were a few things that took a few games to improve, most of which had to do with timing."
Sim said the biggest thing, in the first few games of his 25game trial contract with the Rampage was finding holes on the ice, putting himself in scoring position and passing.
"It was tough, like I said, those first few games, but I knew I wasn't far off," said Sim. "I was close to where I needed to be and it didn't take long for it to click."
Through six games with the Rampage he has four goals. He said it's been great to be successful after not knowing what would happen when he jumped back into action.
"I really wanted to get back playing and everything has been going great, but having personal success early makes the game more fun and gives me somewhere to start, nike free," he said. "My role coming into this team was basically up to myself and how well I was going to play. I knew they wanted me to help them score goals, which I have. I took the opportunity and have been making the most out of it."
Through his six games he said he has played left wing, centre and right wing. Although he hasn't always had this happen with different teams he has been on, Sim said that it's just the way the coaching staff is looking for the best chemistry.
"Every coach has a different way of doing it, but they're all looking for the best chemistry on their team and this one is no different," he said. "I've been shuffled around a lot and it's been all over the place in a short period of time, but I'm enjoying the different experiences."
The Rampage will take on the Texas Stars tonight, kicking off a three game road trip in four days. The team is in Toronto Friday and Hamilton on Saturday. Sim will have a short break next week for Christmas, which he said he's looking forward to.
"Everything happened quickly in the move to San Antonio so I never really looked at where I would be for the holidays," he said. "I'm just looking forward to having my time at home and getting to spend time with family."
